FRANK ON FRIDAY – Incivility

We hear lots of talk about the civil society.  The term “civil” denotes conduct which is polite and orderly.  In essence, it is what is expected of a citizen of a nation which operates in accordance with law and social convention.  It’s really nothing new.  It all comes from the Golden Rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  There was a time when schools taught students what was expected of a good citizen.  They called it Civics, and it wasn’t an American invention.  The teaching of Civics dates back to the earliest theories of civics by Confucius in ancient China and by Plato in ancient Greece.  These traditions in the East and the West imparted concepts of citizens’ rights and the application of justice.  In the United States, the rationale for civics education is the promotion of democratic values to impact people´s political perceptions, to encourage political participation, and to foster the principles enshrined in the Constitution, such as liberty, freedom of speech, and civil rights.  We don’t teach “Civics” anymore.  All 50 states have social studies standards which include civics and government.  That’s great.  One question, however, is why it doesn’t work.  Why don’t the schools turn out young citizens who are imbued with an understanding and love of our founding freedoms, and who are motivated to make informed choices?  The answer to this question lies in the curriculum.  Instead of Civics or History, we teach “social studies.”  As a result, students don’t learn the truth about about either subject.  Although we live in the greatest information age in history, people know less than ever before.  All of us have smart phones that can access the internet from anywhere to find out virtually anything.  But too many young people use the internet only to find the nearest Starbucks location, or what some Kardashian did yesterday.  Despite having almost unlimited information, the Age of Information has become an Age of Ignorance.  As for most things, Thomas Jefferson said it best, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”  The more important question that arises from the failure of Civics education is, why don’t Democrats, and more alarmingly, Democrat elected officials, recognize a duty to practice civility?  They clearly know what it is.  They never tire of lecturing Republicans about their “tone.”  They never tire of warning that the expression of conservative opinions might incite some right-wing extremist to violence.  Now, such a thing never has happened, but they keep warning us anyway.  On the other hand, being afflicted with a mental disorder that compels them to believe everything they support is good, while any differing opinion is evil, they perceive no need to follow their own advice.  They demonize everything said and done by Donald Trump.  They say Trump is not the President, his presidency is invalid, and they seek to hound him from office.  They criticize the Senate’s Obamacare replacement for being drawn up in secret (just like they did in 2009-2010), yet they won’t lift a finger to participate in the process, and won’t contribute one vote to it, or to any other Republican proposal.  It’s open season on Trump for these people.  Democrats are the Resistance, and anything goes.  Civility?  We don’t need no stinkin’ civility.  Remember, it’s a mental disorder.  In 1992, the Clinton campaign saw itself as the insurgents.  Politics was war.  They even set up their famous “War Room” to destroy the Republicans.  The “tone” of the term “War Room” apparently wasn’t a problem.  They just had “sharp elbows.”  Democrats didn’t perceive an alarming “tone” when Kathy Griffin exhibited the President’s decapitated bloody head, or when New York’s Shakespeare in the Park, cast a Trump lookalike as Julius Caesar, being stabbed to death.  And then, a wild-eyed extreme leftist Bernie Sanders supporter targeted Republican Congressmen for assassination.  Armed with a list of six Freedom Caucus members he slated for death, a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle, he shot five people at a Republican baseball practice, for a charity game to benefit needy children.  He was motivated to kill Republicans because elected Democrats and the media all told him Republicans were evil.  Simply put, the “tone” of the constant drum-beat of the Left, caused this whacko to commit violence; to advocate government by assassination, instead of a civil government.  In the aftermath of the shootings, there were calls for unity.  I guess the Democrats must have learned from this tragedy and now plan to tone down their “tone,” right?  Wrong!  Democrats are angrier than ever.  While Congressman Scalise lay in the hospital in critical condition, MSNBC’s Joy Ann Reid attacked him, citing the Congressman’s positions on Obamacare and gay marriage as among the concerning “moral” issues she felt couldn’t be overlooked.  In other words, Scalise disagreed with her, so he deserved what he got.  Steve Pelly of CBS said, “to some degree,” Steve Scalise’s near death and his continued hospitalization are his, his party’s, and Donald Trump’s fault.  Submit or die, huh, Steve?  A New Jersey Democrat Party campaign strategist,’ created new Twitter hashtags, #HuntRepublicans and #HuntRepublicanCongressmen.  The strategist wrote, “We are in a war with selfish, foolish & narcissistic rich people.  Why is it a shock when things turn violent?”  He added, “James Hodgkinson is a citizen availing himself of his Second Amendment remedies.”  Nice “tone” pal.  Then there was Senator Elizabeth Warren.  Fauxcahontas promised President Trump, “you ain’t seen nasty yet.”  Trust me Liz, we’ve seen you, so we’ve seen all the nasty we’ll ever need to look at.  Mentally deranged Democrats, hear this!  You all need to look in the mirror.  Republican’s aren’t shouting down Democrat Congressmen at town hall meetings. Republicans didn’t block roads to stop your rallies; and didn’t try to pull Hillary off the stage while she was speaking.  No Republican is stopping liberals from speaking on college campuses.  No Republican is rioting in the streets wearing masks, and throwing bricks through windows.  No Republican is advocating violence against any Democrat.  That’s you guys.  Hereinafter watch your “tone.”
